BLOG: HISTORY
The Alchemical Homunculus, Part One: Origins

Our blog is up and running this week, and there’s no better place to start than the beginning… of alchemy’s theological, quixotic, and frequently goofy quest to make a little guy in a flask. If you’re interested in history, pseudoscience, or gender theory, you’re in for a treat with editor Anna Cantrell’s essay about the homunculus. Presented in three parts (with new ones dropping Fridays), we invite you to read along and find out what Golgonooza is all about.

“Of particular significance is the concept of bougonia, in which bees are produced from the decaying corpse of a cow.”

— Anna, explaining some of the wacky stuff those alchemists got up to

SUBMISSIONS
One Month Remains

Our first submissions period ends in one month, on December 14, 2025. I know I speak for all four editors when I say that we’ve been pleasantly shocked by the number of people interested in our W3IRD little magazine. Thanks so much to everyone who’s submitted! And if you haven’t submitted yet but you think your work could be a fit for our inaugural issue… why not hit us up?

🎵 Editor Rec: “Narani Narani”

Balming Tiger is an artistic collective of creators (kind of like Golgonooza!) dedicated to making less conventional music. Counting rappers, DJs, and singer-songwriters among their number, this Korean outfit creates wonderfully weird music videos and catchy songs — that subtly play on societal expectations around gender, age, and identity. This song is also a collaboration with Japanese girl group ATARASHII GAKKO, whose in-your-face stylings instantly made me a fan.
